for years, when people would offer compliments on my music, the only response i knew how to give was “thanks, but…” followed by a painfully awkward assessment of why their compliment was invalid.
“thanks, but you’re wrong- this sucks, and i’m terrible. that bass track sounds it like was played by a three year old. but still, you know… thanks.”
i never realized until recently how often most artists deflect compliments, or how off-putting that deflection might make things for the people who are trying to be complimentary of their work. they didn’t sign on for your weird, overpowering lack of confidence- they just liked the tune.
note to self: a compliment isn’t an invocation for analysis. it’s a chance to share a cool moment with a well-meaning person. roll with it.
