my name is joseph. i write and record the music for “champions on sea.”
in fact, i am “champions on sea.” it’s just me. always has been.
i wanted to take this opportunity to say a couple of things of importance.
first, you may have noticed that there are now two COS releases available to you, through either itunes/amazon or spotify: the “walk ‘neath the moon” EP, released last month, and now the “this real” single, released today. this is a big deal for me- in twenty years of recording, these two releases are really the first time my music has been made available via legitimate online vendors, and it’s something i never really thought would happen. i’m pleased to now have the chance to share my work with people in ways that are more accessible, and even more pleased to tell you that an album of new songs- which i have been working very hard to complete since last summer- will also be released on the same formats in the coming months.
the second thing i want to say is perhaps the more important of the two.
for reasons that don’t bear going into, i have often been my own worst enemy when it comes to the music i make- at the worst extremity, i have destroyed the only recordings of many of my songs, and have consistently refused to even attempt exploring available avenues to share my work and find an audience for it. but a few very dear friends have come to me at difficult points during the last few years to do their best to help me overcome apathy, to help me find value and worth in what i make, and to tell me that this music is, somehow, meaningful to them.
it has been this small circle of people that has been lending support and motivation to this music for many years now, and to those people i want to say this:
i am so sincerely grateful for your willingness to be so kind, so invested, and so dedicated to helping me make something out of this.
whether i ever experience “success” as a musician in the conventional sense is almost irrelevant next to the success of being able to say to you that your support and concern has borne the fruit of actual, legitimate release of this music. i only hope that this can, in some small way, begin to repay the expense in time and care you have afforded me over the years, and that the music that is yet to come will continue to serve that debt.
in the interim, i hope that you will all carry on, and preserve yourselves for better times.
